2011-12-23 (Day 483) Empire Electric Theatre

Isn’t that a wonderful name for a cinema?

Accroding to www.scottishcinemas.org.uk/scotland/grangemouth.html, the Empire Electric Theatre opened in December 1913. I guess that just prior to the start of World War I was a bad time to open a cinema, but strangely it reopened in 1916 as "La Scala"

After some extension work in the 1930s, followed by two significant fires, the Electric Theatre closed as a cinema in 1971. Subsequently, it became a bingo hall, which itself closed in 2006.

The exterior is certainly in need of a decent clean, but would certainly look good with a little refurbishment.

The parallels with the Alhambra in Dunfermline are quite striking – it has been made into a real theatre, and many of its original 1920s features are still visible. Wouldn’t it be great to have the same happen here, and a real, viable theatre be created? According to the above link, it is around a 650 seater. I wonder if it could be viable?
