The Limelight Productions, based in Dunfermline, Fife, are one of Scotland’s premier amateur musical theatre companies. Their next show is the spectacular musical "Chess"
This show, written by Tim Rice and the two men from Abba, is a remarkable musical that spans a huge range of musical styles from complex classical choral music through to 1980s rock with soaring guitar solos, and on its journey it calls in to Gilbert and Sullivan, Russian and German folk music, rock ballads and rap.
The dancers make an important contribution to this show, as they cover a variety of styles including the sordid "One Night In Bangkok" as well as the almost classical ballet of the instrumental number simply called "Chess". In the above photo, for the programme of the show, they are closer to Bangkok style!
My first impression when I took this photo was that I had managed – through some fluke – to get the lighting just right. Sadly, I had let too much light fall on the back wall, which was distinctly not black. It would have looked fine in the programme, but I wanted to get it right. Getting it right took a lot more work in Photoshop than I had expected. It’s hard to separate black leggings from a wall that has R, G and B down around 2 or 3. But at least I learned a lot about the selection tools in the process!
Chess will be performed in the Alhambra Theatre, Dunfermline, on the 6th, 7th and 8th October. I cannot over-state how good a show this is, and how good a production I am sure that it is going to be. Please come along – if you would like any tickets then get in touch with me and I can arrange them for you!
