2024-02-01 (Day 032) Bo’ness Reccy

This is the Bo’ness recreation centre, known as the Bo’ness reccy. It’s where I am doing my swimming training and, sadly, it is going to be shut down.

Just as with Falkirk Town Hall, the rec has been found to be no longer fit for the purpose. And a report was published that showed that just to bring it up to scratch would cost over £4m – without a single extra facility being made available to the public for that cash. Well, apart from the “facility” of not having it fall down around your ears, of course.

The council is saying that the money saved will be spent on improving public access to facilities in local school recreation facilities. But that’s not going to be of much use to those who like to go swimming during the daytime, when schools are being used as schools.

There is a spirited local campaign to Save The Reccy, but I can’t help feel it is doomed. The building is a bit tatty, to say the least and If we couldn’t save the town hall I suspect that the reccy has no chance.

Sad times.
