2024-04-17 (Day 108) Stewart Memorial Fountain

This magnificent fountain, in Kelvingrove Park, commemorates Lord Provost Robert Stewart, widely credited with being the man most responsible for bringing Glasgow a supply of fresh water from Loch Katrine. Built in 1870, designed by James Sellars and made by sculptors John Mossman and James Young, the fountain has imagery of the Trossachs based on Sir Walter Scott’s poem “The Lady Of The Lake” – the lady herself topping of the fountain.

It was significantly refurbished in 1988, but continued to suffer from vandalism. Seriously, who could be such an appalling person as to vandalise this?

To be fair, the more recent news stories about the fountain seem to be concerns that it is not actually operating as a fountain. Let’s hope people are becoming a little better and not trying to damage such a magnificent monument as this.
