Another sunrise! Someone had posted on our local Facebook group to warn that the M9 was at a standstill as a result of an accident, and so I went over the back roads to get to work – and was rewarded with a magnificent sunrise over the hills as I drove east.
The road that I used – Vellore Road – goes between Maddiston and Linlithgow – feels as if it should have a lot of history associated with it. I’m struggling to find much information about it, though. It does share a name with a city in Tamil Nadu, India, and according to a post on the “Broon Scots” page on Facebook it was “a vital artery for the East India Company”, but I’m still trying to find corroboration.
Another post on Wikimedia Commons says that after the Union Canal closed in 1964, Vellore Road was upgraded to service the Haining brickworks. The bridge where Vellore Road crossed the Union Canal was replaced and the canal was pushed through a pipe. However, a new bridge was built as part of the re-opening of the canal in 2001.
