A memorial is being built in Falkirk to celebrate International Workers’ Memorial Day. It is not finished yet, but I grabbed an early pic as I think it’s a really attractive symbol of an important cause.
I know that we have all found occasions where Health and Safety regulations appear to get in the way of doing a job, but I’d rather be inconvenienced than killed or maimed. Everyone should be able to do their jobs in safety, and this is perhaps particularly in the forefront of our minds in Falkirk, which is at the heart of an area that still has a very strong and proud manufacturing sector.
It worries me a lot about trade with certain countries, where worker safety and environmental considerations are inadequately policed. You don’t have to be a rabid communist to believe that people should be able to go to and come back from work safely, or that their land and their rivers should be kept clean and free of pollutants.
I look forward to this public art work being completed!
