2024-01-29 (Day 029) Inside A Kelpie

Falkirk’s world-famous Kelpies live in a park called The Helix, and the team that runs the park does tours of the inside of the Kelpies, giving information about these amazing structures. Normally charged for, in January these tours are free – and today I went along to hear all about them.

This is the view from inside ‘Duke’, the Kelpie with its head down. The structure is over 30m tall, and weighs in north of 300 tonnes.

Kelpies – devilish sea creatures that would entice humans to touch them and then carry those humans off to their death in the water – could take any form they wanted, but frequently the form of a horse. Sculptor Andy Scott envisaged them as Clydesdale horses; animals that powered much of Scotland’s industrial economy in the 19th century. And so were born Duke (head down) and Baron (head up).

I am sure I will be returning to the Kelpies any time I am in need of a photograph. But for now – this is what it’s like to be inside a 30m tall Clydesdale kelpie!
