2024-04-05 (Day 096) Caterpillar Occupation Memorial

In 1987, workers at the Caterpillar factory in Uddingston were told that their factory was being closed – a shock to the workforce who had been led to believe that their performance was exceptional and, if anything, the plant was going to be expanded and awarded new contracts.

Of course, the action ended in failure – you can’t force someone to employ you – and it set a pattern for factory closures in Scotland over the following two or three decades. Inward investment is a wonderful thing, home-grown companies are better still.

The land on which Caterpillar stood is now mostly housing, along with a small outdoor shopping centre anchored by a Scotmid supermarket. Such a shame.
