2024-02-10 (Day 041) Garrowhill Park

I found myself in the East End of Glasgow today, and just for old times’ sake I went to visit Garrowhill Park.

I lived in Garrowhill from the age of five through to around fourteen or fifteen. My walk to and from primary school was through this park, which is a much steeper hill than the photograph conveys.

There used to be swings, a chute and a roundabout on the far side of the path at the bottom of the hill, near the area that now has a basketball court. There were monkey bars too, as well as a natural climbing frame – that is, a tree that had fallen and was trimmed, but left for us all to play on.

The path on the left of this picture was also used as a “jump” when sledging season came around. There was a route that went from the top of the slope by the church fence, heading towards the swings and crossing the footpath. A lot of careful work went into building a ramp that would give enough lift for the sledge to jump across the path if you got enough speed up!

Other changes? The Scout Hall and the British Legion Hall are gone. The school is completely different; the old buildings having been knocked down and replaced with a new structure.

Interesting to go back and look at the park!
